History: I feel the word "private" carries with it an excess of neurotic egotism..

Since he came to Hadriel, he met Mello, who informed him of time line differences, how the Door generally works, and even told him how Beyond dies in his homeworld. During the Pleasant Valley event, where he resided as an estranged Chemistry teacher, he saw Sharon's painting of various people, particularly L, causing him to lash out and commit his first murder in Hadriel, killing Sharon.

Through this, he discovered that L also resided in Hadriel, and made the promise to never harm Sharon again, nor use Mello's real name again, in exchange for keeping his own information safe. Then, following that, Beyond went out of his way to attract L's attention through a series of continued, gruesome murders. First with Seel, then Kain, and the attempt on Cal. The attempt on Cal ended his own life, and when he awoke in Hope's Temple, L was there waiting for him.

It didn't take much to provoke Beyond into attacking L, leading to L's torture and ultimate end, as L didn't resurrect afterwards, despite Beyond waiting for him. When he discovered that Sharon had left the caves suddenly, Beyond inquired to Mello, asking if L had retured as well. Upon which, he revealed what he had done to L in his final moments. And it wasn't too much longer after that when Beyond was returned to his own homeworld, making his last stay here a fairly short one.

Personality:
Beyond initially comes acrost as polite, if not exceptionally awkward, introducing himself as a private investigator by the name of Rue Ryuzaki. Although he says he's just an investigator, since he believes being labeled private would indicate egotism. He is first discovered under the bed at the first victim's, Believe Bridesmaid's, murder scene. He gives a bow with a nice to meet you to Misora.

His mannerisms mimic those of L, such as sitting precariously with his knees to his chest, to which he claims that one's deductive ability increases by forty percent, and biting on one of his thumbnails when in thought. Described as a tall man with a pronounced slouch, he also has the tendency to crawl around on all fours in order to properly examine a crime scene, and mimic the resemblence of the murdered bodies. Misora describes his movements as rather unsettling, stating that they would make a child cry, or cause a normal person to cringe and look away.

In addition, at Believe's house, he walked out of the room to return with a jar of strawberry jam that he pulls from the victim's fridge, almost as though he lived there himself. He also left the refrigerator open upon leaving it. He states that it is his 'lunch'. Which he promptly begins eating off of his hands. His excuse for eating such is, “When I start thinking, I get a craving for sweets. If I want to work well, jam is essential. Sugar is good for the brain.” After eating four handfuls of the stuff, he promptly put his lips on the rim of the jar and slurps (loudly) the rest of the contents, consuming the entire jar within moments.

Misora claims this reminds her of a considerably less adorable version of Winnie the Pooh.

Additionally, he makes coffee in such a manner that Misora thought it was poison initially. It was exceptionally gritty, being mostly a cup full of sugar with just a small amount of coffee added. Or, when stating his satisfaction, "That makes me so happy, I could eat a jar of molasses."

He also seems to be a bit of an obsessive fan with a certain manga series, Akazukin Chacha. And he has a supernatural level of speed reading, being able to read a 376 page book within five minutes. Though, whether that's because he actually read the book beforehand to commit the crime with, or if he actually has that super-human capability, is not explained. He also has a photographic memory. He seems to enjoy baiting people along, encouraging them to play his game by feigning ignorance, and setting the pieces properly into place - making Misora believe, to some degree, that she is reaching these conclusions on her own.

At one point, he does make the proclomation that he is an aggressive top, and never having submitted to anything, not even a traffic light. And claims that his determination to never be submissive is one of the few things he can boast about.

Beyond has also displayed that he practices an evil laugh from time to time. And it was described as a harsh, cruel laugh, but an unnatural laugh, a phony laugh. As if laughing was just another task he had to perform. It's as though this laughing bit is a hobby of his and has practiced it since he was young.

Beyond was born with Shinigami Eyes; an attribute which allows him to see people's real names and the exact date they will be expected to die, unless another circumstance shortens it further. He uses this ability to find his victims, especially for his final crime spree where he finds people with alliterative names. His eyes spur within him to make it his purpose in life to kill people who are fated to die in the very near future, and use them as personal expiriments to see how much a person can take of a certain influence before meeting their demise by his hand.

He tests Misora's competence by challenging her line of thinking during the case and baiting her along. He pushes her to see certain clues that she wouldn't have noticed on her own, such as the specific missing volumes of a certain manga series on a victim's bookshelf. However, despite him leading her along, he doesn't suspect that she will actually solve the case. He does, additionally, physically attack her in an alleyway with a club, to see her combat style. During this time, he displays his physical capability in wielding a weapon during combat, as well as his speed as he escapes the situation. He had no intention of directly overpowering her so much as to see if she really could defend herself.

He is additionally quite a bit of a liar, and uncannily observant, weaving the web to suit his needs. He doesn't go out of his way to hide a lie, either, when caught in it, and will easily swap the sides of his story to suit the needs of the person before him. One such particular example is when he claims that he doesn't have any secrets to Misora. And when Misora counters it by telling Beyond that he's a detective, he simply answers, "Oh? Then I do." He also displays awareness that Misora is interloping with another source, and possibly aware that it is L. He makes a simple comment after eavesdropping on her after her 'using the bathroom.' He asks her why she didn't flush the toilet.

Overall, Beyond is an intelligent, manipulative, and evasive individual, seeking to defeat L no matter what it takes. His goal is to create the unsolvable crime for the brilliant detective, ending by taking his own life and making it look like a murder. He will bend the circumstances how he sees fit to get what he wants and can be exceptionally cold-blooded, justifying his reasons through his eyes and desires.

Abilities:
Intelligence: Beyond is a very intelligent and calculating individual. Up to and including a crime he almost entirely got away with, which would have ended with his death. He also has the evident skills of a detective, and behaves as a private investigator as we see him in Another Note.

Hand to hand combat: Although he may not look it, he is physically skilled in combat. He can easily hold his own against Naomi Misora in a form of Capoeira Martial Arts while he wields a club. He is able to dodge and escape without issue. He is also able to overpower his opponents, particularly his victims, in a similar manner.

Shinigami Eyes: Beyond Birthday was born with a set of eyes that permits him to see the dates in which people will die invariably, as well as their true name, as displayed floating above their heads.

Sweets Tolerance: Beyond has been shown to be able to eat entire jars of jam, licking it off of his fingers. He also puts what can only be described as a cup full of sugar with a little bit of coffee added as his supposed definition of a proper drink. He even says things such as, "That makes me so happy, I could eat a whole jar of molasses."

Flaws: Beyond is a murderer, first and foremost. Initially, it started as a way to experiment with close to one's death dates with the ways one can die, since they would die anyway. He has a purely observant standpoint and very little feeling for his victims. He can attack purely for observance sake or for whatever goal he believes will be aided by such an endeavour. He ultimately sought to surpass L with the perfect crime - one that L could never solve. With that initiative, he had the end goal to take his own life to make it so. He can also eat a cringe-worthy level of jams and similarly jarred sweets.
